Printing Recommendations

How do I open PDF files?

You may have to download a free software like Adobe Reader to open and print the PDF files.

What printer should I use?

I recommend an eco-tank printer such as the Epson Eco-Tank ET-2800. The ink is quite a lot less expensive compared to other types of printers and lasts a long time.

What paper should I use?

If you’re just starting out with junk journaling I recommend any basic 24lb, 8.5×11″ home office paper. You can also print on A4 size paper by adjusting the scale in your print settings.

Card stock is great for pockets, ephemera, cards, and other bits and pieces that need a bit more durability and structure.

In the future, you might want to experiment with printing on other papers, like vellum, sticker paper, and so on. But some regular printer paper and card stock will serve 95% of junk journaling needs!

Troubleshooting Printing Issues

My prints come out too small?

Try adjusting the scale setting before you print from your computer. Set the scale to 100% or “actual size”, depending on your particular PDF program.

If your printer always prints with a border, this can make the prints slightly smaller as well. Unfortunately there is no way around this if your printer doesn’t have a borderless setting.

Why do my prints come out faded?

Faded prints can happen for a few different reasons:

  1. Running low on ink. Check your ink levels and replace your ink if it’s running low (especially black ink!)
  2. Many printers will give you a “vivid” or “vibrant” prints setting. Because all printers are a little different I can’t tell you exactly where yours is – try searching through the menu on your printer or check the manual!
  3. Some designs are meant to look more pale or faded. This may be the case if the first two options don’t work!

Why are there lines through my prints?

This can sometimes happen when one of the print heads are clogged. This is especially likely to happen if you haven’t used your printer for several weeks, but it can happen even with regular use.

Many printers have an option on the menu that will clean the nozzles for you. Check your printer’s manual for specifics.

Why do my prints come out with a white border?

Some printers are able to print “borderless” and some printers don’t give you this option at all. You may have to Google your specific model of printer to see if it can print borderless.

If your printer is able to print borderless, you will usually find this setting in the print dialogue on your computer right before you go to print. If not, you can buy a paper chopper or guillotine relatively inexpensively to trim the edges.

Can I print from a phone or tablet?

If you have a wireless printer, you should be able to print from a mobile device! Personally, I find it easiest to print from a desktop or laptop computer but in a pinch, it is possible to print to most modern printers from your phone or tablet.

You are welcome to:

  • print the files as many times as you like
  • use them in your own journals and craft projects
  • give your assembled crafts away as gifts
  • sell your assembled craft projects at markets or online.

I do ask that you make significant changes to the designs if you are selling any finished product for money.

This could mean:

  • cutting or tearing them up and rearranging them
  • using them in collages with other elements
  • using the journaling papers as signatures in your hand-bound books
  • distressing the paper with ink, paint, coffee, etc.

In other words: please don’t simply print the papers, trim them, and sell them as is.

I also ask that you don’t re-sell, redistribute, modify or share the digital files, except for with a small group of friends (2-3 people). I understand that friends trade files with each other, and that’s fine. My concern is more with the files being linked or uploaded to mass scale file sharing websites and public forums, etc.

Particularly if you sell at craft fairs or online, I appreciate a link back to www.moonlightmemoirs.com, but it’s not required.
